Nearly three decades ago I was lucky enough to marry the man I loved in my parent’s garden. Saying “I do” was a huge commitment, and scary, but it changed our lives in a wonderful way. We made our promises to each other in front of our family and friends, and celebrated with champagne and a croquembouche.
Today my husband still makes me a coffee in the morning, and we argue over who has (or hasn’t) done the dishes. And we hug our two children, who now tower over me. I can’t imagine what my life might have been like without him.
I’m not a very political person. But I do believe that we should all have the right to make a binding and open commitment to a loved one, and to celebrate and recognise that commitment. That is how we truly become family. This rainbow comes with the hope that one day all of my friends will be able to have the same opportunity that I did. Come on, Australia – please vote yes for marriage equality.
